I am trying retrieve my serial number for the iPad but no luck on apple/s web site. Is there a way to track it's location after the fact? It was not set up or even registered, guess I was naive thinking it would never get stolen. Any help in how to locate the serial # would help. At least then I can report it stolen.

The only way to track an iOS device is through find my iPhone.
If you did not activate it on the device before it was stolen, you are out of luck.
There is nothing Apple can do for you.

Did you install Find My iPad and configure on iCloud prior to the lose?
if you did, login into iCloud and search for it.
If not, you can't.

hope someone out there can help me.
Yesterday someone broke in to our house and stole our two ipads and a laptop.
Unfortunately everything is backed up on the lap top so right now I'm missing all my photos.
I haven't used icloud which I regret so much.
I also have missed to install "find my ipad" so I'm really lost here.
Is there any chance i could find my photos somewhere?
is it possible to find the ipads without the "find my ipad"?

Report to police along with serial number. Change all your passwords.

If you have not enabled Find My iPad, you can't track, lock or wipe your iPad
1. Change your passwords immediately
2. Notify the credit card company immediately
3. Report to insurance company
4. Report to the police
Restore your iPad to factory default, setting>general>reset>erase all content and setting. When you go through Setup Assistant on a new device using iOS 5 or later, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.
After your device restarts, your settings and accounts are restored and Backup starts downloading your purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, books, Camera Roll, and other content.
Note: You may be prompted to enter the passwords for all accounts enabled on your device. You may also be prompted to enter the password for for any iTunes, iBookstore and App Store accounts for which iCloud Backup is attempting to restore content.
A progress bar will appear underneath the apps that are being downloaded. To prioritize the restore of a specific app, tap its icon. Restore will attempt to download the same version of the app that you had installed previously. If that version is no longer available, the latest version of the app will be restored.
If you are using iTunes Match (U.S. only), you can download any of your songs, albums, or playlist from iCloud after the restore is complete.
To check if the restore is complete, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.

You should be able to re-download them from the store (if they are still in the store) via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage. You can also re-download ibooks and, depending upon which country that you are in, potentially music, films and TV shows. : re-downloading.
