How to create adhoc Wifi Hotspot with iPhone to connect Apple TV for Mirroring and Airplay?

I don't want to use my iPhone to share or tether my iPad or laptop etc. with my cellular data plan.

What I want is to create a hotspot with my iPhone (or iPad) so that I may connect my Apple TV to the adhoc network so I am able to stream video and music from my iPhone to the Apple TV.

I do presentations in front of live audiences and want the ability to mirror my iPad or use Airplay to stream video and photos to the Apple TV without connecting to a public WiFi network.

The apple TV is so small, I just tuck it into my bag with an HDMI cable and I am able to tap into LCD projectors and flat screens and use keynote or video from my iPad so my audiences can see my presentations.

Seems pretty simple. But I cannot activate a hot spot on my iPhone without signing up for AT&T's service. Fact is, I have no need to tether my iPhone or iPad, I just want to create an adhoc Wifi network solely for the use of my Apple TV.

I posted this question to the iPhone discussions as well, but thought someone here has wanted to do the same thing.

Someone suggested just bringing any WiFi router and connecting devices to that. But that's not a solution. It's about mobility and simplicity and not creating a larger footprint.

Thoughts?

Verify that your carrier supports Personal Hotspot for your device and that you have Personal Hotspot enabled on your cellular plan:

Personal hotspot keeps searching

Ipad 2 with IOS 6.1.2 the personal hotspot feature does not function. GSM carrier side is ok and the connection sharing is not forbidden, but in Ipad the personal hotspot feature just keeps searching. Have upgraded the IOS to latest one, reset networks etc several times. Nothing seems to help so far. Any ideas how to fix this bug (hope it is not a new feature of IPad 2)?

Hi, I have the new iPad 4G on orange and the personal hotspot feature seems to be missing, I have read that this is down to the carrier so which uk networks support this feature?

Thanks,

Can't activate Personal Hotspot on iPad 4, but can on iPhone 4...

Hello -

I have the new iPad and I can't get the personal hotspot to turn on. It simply has the round 'busy' icon and no on/off switch. The strange thing is that this works fine on my iPhone 4 with the same carrier (b-mobile in Bhutan).

Has any one heard of this before?

It seems strange that it will work with my iPhone and not my iPad..

Thanks!

Kyle

Re: iPad personal hotspot (uk)

Yes, I also had top service from the Three store.  Everyone there was knowledgable and eger to help.  They tried different combination of cellphones and plans to get the cheapest deal for me.

I showed them how to enable tethering on the iPad, and they were very impressed (they didn't know it could be done!).  After making sure the Three SIM can tether with the iPad, I then bought an iPhone 4S with all-you-can-eat data plan.  Now I can use the same SIM in either iPhone or iPad.  The sales person also told me they will unlock your iPhone after your first bill.  Unlike AT&T, which will only unlock your iPhone at the end of the contract peroid (that is one major reason I don't want to buy iPhone in the States)

After my iPhone is unlocked, I will try my AT&T SIM in it.

Re: Personal hotspot not working

Yes, go to settings>cellular dat>configure apn settings> cellular data on

You will find personal hotspot there. If it is not there restart your iPad after configuring APN settings.
