Magnetic function isn't working for iPad Smart Case

I've recently purchased a red colour iPad Smart Case for my iPad with Retina Display (4th Gen) from the Apple Store. However, I have enquiries and troubleshooting about the case:

 

How do I activate the magnetic function on my iPad? Even the smart case is attached on the iPad, the tablet does not seem to recognize the case.Does the iPad smart case suppose to have magnets around the perimeter of the case? As the lid does not adhere when I close it.
