I am out of the country and my iPad was stolen. My phone does not work here and there is no place to contact apple with a general question to see if I can find out what my serial

I am trying retrieve my serial number for the iPad but no luck on apple/s web site. Is there a way to track it's location after the fact? It was not set up or even registered, guess I was naive thinking it would never get stolen. Any help in how to locate the serial # would help. At least then I can report it stolen.
