internet on Ipad while traveling

I want to have access to the internet on an Ipad while traveling.  I have wifi at home.   I do not use a cell phone.  I'd like to use internet service sporatically - maybe a month or two at a time. 

Is that possible?   Which internet provider?   Which I Pad do I need?
