Downloading 'Free Songs' is not recommended and its best to purchase from the itunes store as it is safe a secure. You can find free indie songs and free song of the week (supported by itunes) from the homescreen of the 'Itunes app'.
If you have songs in your itunes, place them in your itunes and plug you iPad into your computer. Click 'Sync' and make sure you have have the songs you want on your iPad selected!
